As of this morning, when starting FM10 a message indicating "licensing
expired" shows up, and the program would not run.
(likely related to the change of year -- best wishes for 2013!)

Other FM10 users in different locations encountered a similar problem.

The Adobe chat representative suggested contacting Adobe tech support by
phone, where I (expectedly) got a "closed for the holiday" message.

FM11, FM9 and FM8 do start as expected.

I tried solutions 1 and 2, with no success. Restarting the 'Flexnet
Licensing Service' and 'Flexnet Licensing Service 64' did not help either.

Not yet desperate enough to try solution 3, which involves uninstalling FM
and re-installing it -- perhaps the problem in Adobe licensing services
will be fixed in the meantime? (as other FM10 users encountered the problem
and more and more will likely encounter it when they are back from holiday)

I'm seeing this problem as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think this will be something that can be resolved
by Adobe fixing something in their licensing services. Before starting
FM10 this morning, I disconnected from the Internet to test whether this
is a local issue or from phoning home. Since I got this message (and
FM10 won't start) with no Internet connection, it seems like a local
application issue. I'm thinking that they will need to deliver a patch
for FM10 to fix this. Hopefully we'll hear from someone on this soon.

as a trial version, and save as FM10 when FM10 can be used again.

When various FM10 bugs were discussed in the list a while back, FM11 was
mentioned as the patch for FM9/10 (for a fee), but that's a different story ;-)

[ Two years ago or so I encountered the "licensing expired" problem when
installing TCS2 on a new computer. The only real fix then, after spending
many chat/phone hours with all kinds of "solution" attempts, was to get a
new serial number from Adobe's representatives in Israel at the time. The
old serial number was absolutely valid on the previous computer or when
tested in other computers with de-activation. ]

The other "fix" seems to be to roll back your system clock to before Jan
1, 2013.

I certainly hope that FM11 *isn't* the patch for FM10. I know they want
people to upgrade, but that would seem a bit extreme. I'd hope that a
new SN would fix this, but unless this was actually planned, it seems
surprising that it would affect *everyone* (waiting to hear from anyone
who isn't affected).

Here's one option for a temporary solution to this problem until Adobe
provides a real fix. Just create the following batch file and put it in
the FM folder and set up a shortcut to this batch file. It grabs the
current date, changes the date to 2012, runs FM, then resets the date.
You do have to "Press any key" at the PAUSE prompt so that FM has a
chance to start up. There are ways to make this more elegant, but this
seems to provide a reasonable workaround. If you're on Win7 or Vista,
you'll likely need to run this "As Administrator".

IMPORTANT: Use this "fix" at your own risk. I offer no warranty of
fitness whatsoever!

Hi Scott

I've just tested your batch file and it also works for me. After I "press
any key to continue", I get a message saying "The system cannot accept the
date entered", but I just have to press enter again to get FrameMaker 10 up
and running.

Thank you very much for the fix, Scott, you've already done your first good
deed for 2013! ;-)

Thank you for the suggestion about using a trial FM11 as a
temporary(?) solution. I have an immediate need to get two installs running
and will attempt. If Adobe was serious about FM then existing FM10 users
would get a no-cost upgrade to FM11.

I went to the site indicated by the link below and attempted Solution 2,
even though I have standalone Framemaker. It was not installed as part of an
application suite. When I attempt to Deactivate, and then Deactivate
Permanently, I receive the message "Please connect to the internet to
deactivate" and I AM connected to the internet. I am unable to deactivate my
account at all, so I am unable to attempt Solution #2. Also, I did stop and
then restart the FlexNet Licensing Services and that did not work either.
Like others on this, I am unable to use Framemaker 10.

I am sure that it is everyone who has FM 10, regardless if it is part of a
suite or standalone. I have a longtime client and I access a virtual PC on
their network and on this virtual PC FM 10 is installed as a standalone
product. I just logged into the virtual PC and attempted to open FM 10 and
get the same lousy message. Installing FM 11 as a workaround is not an
option as this is not my PC, but my client's. I wouldn't dare install any
other SW w/out their permission first.

Also, just talked to a colleague and she gets this same message when she
opens FM 10 on her desktop (and it was installed as part of the TCS suite.)
It appears to be any FM10 user.

Licensing Service' and restart/start the service.

Resetting the date is not a viable solution due to versioning issues.



As others have suggested, a free upgrade to FM11 would seem to be an
appropriate response from Adobe.



In the short term this is costing me serious money! As a freelance
author, I had hoped to do a solid day's work yesterday, free from the
usual interruptions as everyone else was on holiday. Instead, I spent a
frustrating day trying various suggested solutions that all failed to
work. I finally downloaded a trial version of FM11 over my none-too-fast
internet link.



I AM NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER !

a suite or standalone. I have a longtime client and I access a virtual PC
on their network and on this virtual PC FM 10 is installed as a
standalone product. I just logged into the virtual PC and attempted to
open FM 10 and get the same lousy message. Installing FM 11 as a
workaround is not an option as this is not my PC, but my client's. I
wouldn't dare install any other SW w/out their permission first.

even though I have standalone Framemaker. It was not installed as part of
an application suite. When I attempt to Deactivate, and then Deactivate
Permanently, I receive the message "Please connect to the internet to
deactivate" and I AM connected to the internet. I am unable to deactivate
my account at all, so I am unable to attempt Solution #2. Also, I did
stop and then restart the FlexNet Licensing Services and that did not
work either. Like others on this, I am unable to use Framemaker 10.

Further to the last message from me - I tried the support "chat" system
three times yesterday and three time my call was dropped without

I appreciate the attempts at help but resetting the clock on
your computer, particularly if you are tied into a critical network, is one
the absolutely stupidest things to do. The unintended consequences are,
literally, indefinable.

Anjaneai,



I went to the site indicated by the link below and attempted Solution 2,
even though I have standalone Framemaker. It was not installed as part of an
application suite. When I attempt to Deactivate, and then Deactivate
Permanently, I receive the message "Please connect to the internet to
deactivate" and I AM connected to the internet. I am unable to deactivate my
account at all, so I am unable to attempt Solution #2. Also, I did stop and
then restart the FlexNet Licensing Services and that did not work either.
Like others on this, I am unable to use Framemaker 10.

Also, please go to start - run - launch - services.msc and look for 'Flexnet
Licensing Service' and restart/start the service.

I forgot to mention another temporary potential workaround: set the
computer's date a few days earlier (so that you are still in 2012).
However, this may introduce other problems with security software, e-mail
programs, archiving etc.

Hi all,

I encountered this error message as well. Here are my findings:

*I have TCS 3.5. I am running FM 10 on a Win 7, 64 bit box.
*If I set the clock to a date prior to January 1st, 2013, then FM will open
successfully. Note that once FrameMaker is open, I actually switch my clock
back to the correct time and everything seems to work fine. I guess I'll
just never close FrameMaker until there's a fix or go through the process
of toggling my system clock backward and forward. Joy!!
*I tried solution 2 as described here and it did not work for me:
http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-licensing-product-expired-cs4.html.
I am not willing to try solution 3 unless I have some assurance it will
actually resolve the problem. A complete uninstall/reinstall is radical and
incredibly time consuming.

As others mentioned, the clock change is better then not having access to
FrameMaker but it is a completely unacceptable workaround even for the
short term. I really hope Adobe comes out with a fix for this ASAP.

As Shlomo, I tried your suggested solution 1 and 2 without success. Again, just like Shlomo, I don't want to try solution 3.
Just as a note: simply setting the date back to 2012 makes the license issue disappear. But this is something I can do as I have admin rights on my PC. What can I do for all my colleagues that are getting back from holidays today, need Framemaker 10 and don't have admin rights??

Maybe the Mayans miscalculated the end of the world by 10 days? ;-)
My FM 10 also tells me that my license has expired!

I will try to postpone the end of the world by using the workarounds. :-)

The zip file extending my license worked. However, when you have bought
something you tend to think that you own it, so an expiry date on a fully
paid software product should not be there at all.

This is the kind of thing that really hurts Adobes image in the minds of users who purchase licenses with the simple idea that they will be able to use the software when they need it.I have earlier complained about the fact that installing CS6 caused the disabling of my TCS3 Acrobat X thirty days after installing CS6. Somebody at Adobe needs to get the installation team for the CS suites to respect other installations, especially if those licenses are for other Adobe products. Craig

A quick update on my last post. For those of you, who can't or don't want to change their system date, there is a new workaround that I have included in my earlier post. We have uploaded a utility which will do the suitable modification to a configuration file, to make FM10 launch successfully. You can download the utility and instructions on how to run it, from the original blog post http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2013/01/update-on-the-issue-of-framemaker-10-not-launching.html .

I ran the first utility provided earlier. My version of FM is 10.0.2, and I
see on your second solution that the utilities are for 10.0 and 10.0.1.
Should I run this second utility or not (specifically the version for

As Shlomo, I tried your suggested solution 1 and 2 without success. Again, just like Shlomo, I don't want to try solution 3.
Just as a note: simply setting the date back to 2012 makes the license issue disappear. But this is something I can do as I have admin rights on my PC.
What can I do for all my colleagues that are getting back from holidays today, need Framemaker 10 and don't have admin rights??

In response to an offlist question:

I have no idea what version of FM that I had on my desktop and laptop before
I ran the first fix provided this morning. After running this first fix, the
version for both installations is now set to 10.0.2.

For my client's virtual PC, I ran the first fix simply so I could open FM
and determine the version. After the first fix, it was 10.0.1 so I ran the
version of the second fix (the one for FM 1.0.1) for this virtual PC. During
the running of the second fix, flyover text opens that states something
about installing 10.0.3 of FM (note the .3); however, after running this
second fix, the version of FM on the laptop now is set to 10.0.2 - So, it's
not .3 and somehow, the first fix got me to .2 even though it took two fixes
to get my client's PC to that.

I give and I don't want to take the chance of screwing something up by
running a not needed second fix - as per Brad Anderson's email just a few
moments ago.

It's like Russian roulette with FM fixes right about now.

Hi Tammy,



The patch has been successfully applied on your client's PC.
To verify that the update is installed, check the Version column in the Add or Remove Program tool. When the update is successfully installed, the Version of FrameMaker is updated to 10.0.3.419.
When you apply updates, the product version is NOT updated in the About FrameMaker screen. (Help > About FrameMaker will show 10.0.2.419)

You can apply this patch ,it is a superset . It is available at http://helpx.adobe.com/framemaker/kb/cant-launch-framemaker-10.html .

1. Go to Add and Remove Programs.

2. Look for " Name" and "Version" fields for FrameMaker 10 entry.

3. If the name says "Adobe FrameMaker 10" and Version says "10.0.0.388" or "10.0.1.402" or "10.0.2.419"pls. download TCS3Update.zip file, unzip it and run the executable.

4. Otherwise, if the name says "Adobe FrameMaker 10.0.1" and version says "10.0.1.408" or 10.0.2.419" download TCS3_5Update.zip, unzip it and run the executable.

issue. Just one more clarifying point - The first fix (the earliest fix)
that Kapil provided DOES change the FM version number (at least for
standalone FM) from 10.x to 10.0.2. . . in the Help > About Framemaker
window. The version number that you see in the Help > About window is the
same version number that is displayed in the control panel for Add/Remove
Programs. Both of the second fixes (the two later fixes) do NOT change the
FM version number in the Help > About window. The version remains 10.0.2.419
in the Help > About window while displaying as 10.0.3 in the Add/Remove
Programs pane. Just adds another point of confusion IMHO.



I can't speak to TCS users. Evidently, there is a problem for many being
able to see the individual version of FM in the suite in the Add/Remove
Programs panel.

1. Go to Add and Remove Programs.



2. Look for " Name" and "Version" fields for FrameMaker 10 entry.



3. If the name says "Adobe FrameMaker 10" and Version says "10.0.0.388" or
"10.0.1.402" or "10.0.2.419"pls. download TCS3Update.zip file, unzip it and
run the executable.



4. Otherwise, if the name says "Adobe FrameMaker 10.0.1" and version says
"10.0.1.408" or 10.0.2.419" download TCS3_5Update.zip, unzip it and run the
executable.

What can I do for all my colleagues that are getting back from holidays

today, need Framemaker 10 and don't have admin rights??

The original "fix" works for me. I waited until later today and tried this latest fix first. I get this same error with both "fixes":



My version is showing as 10.0.2…

I ran the earlier fix and that did work. These new files do not. I tried running the new ones first.

I have installed the patch, and it allows me to open FrameMaker 10. Thank you.


Interesting aside:

- When I check Control Panel > Programs and Features, it still shows Adobe FrameMaker 10.0.1.

- When I check from FrameMaker's Help > About screen, it shows Version: 10.0.2.419

I was expecting to see 10.0.3 somewhere.

* Since there was some confusion around which update to apply, we have added more detailed instructions on which of the 2 updates you should install, based on your product name and the version #. Dear all,

I was to enthusiastic about Adobe's fix:

- I have installed the latest FM-10 which is is 10.0.2.419
- This requested the patch offered for TCS 3.0. The other one quits right after the start.
- But the patch for TCS 3.0 just works a while to provide an error message:
Adobe FrameMaker 10.0.3 Update
Done with Errors. Error Code: U44M2P6

Adobe, please react.

Well, I am glad to see it is an issue for everyone ;-)

I am going try the fix today. "Winding the clock back" yesterday worked ok
for me to do what I need to so will see what happens with the fix. I have
been reading all your posts, most informative.

Can't remember who was trying to use the Adobe chat service - but don't !
They will just tell you it is a technical problem and point you to the web
site links anyway.

Hi, Megha and all.


When I go to Unininstall or Change a Program, I see "Adobe Technical Communication Suite 3" with a version number of 3.0.52. I do not see FrameMaker listed solo and therefore can't verify the version number you supplied below.

Yesterday, I ran, as administrator, the file called FM10_LicenseUpdater.exe.

Is this all I need to do?

To display your Framemaker version number, start Framemaker 10, go to the
Help menu item and click on About Framemaker. This works for a TCS 3
installation.

Note that if you can't start Framemaker due to the license expired message
you may have to set your date back into 2012, but that would be a good sign
you don't have the update.
